When shes at a restaurant eyeing a loaf of bread she knows she must limit herself on, she simply knocks it onto the floor.
I know I wont eat it if its been on the floor, Veytia said. So Ill just accidently knock it off the table.
Much to the disappointment of the other person whos sharing the loaf.
Now, Veytia and her fellow members at Slimming World, a weight-loss program that takes the approach of eating all you want but only the right kinds of foods, will have a new motivator.
Beginning this week, for every pound a member loses, they will be given a British pound, which converted to U.S. money equals about $1.50. Lose Pounds and Earn Pounds ends June 20.
The concept comes from Slimming Worlds roots in the U.K., which uses the pound for its currency. Slimming World began in the U.K. in 1970, and advocates say it has helped five million people lose weight.
Over the last year, it has branched out locally. There are four groups that meet in Flower Mound: 7 p.m. Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, as well as 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursdays, all at Flower Mound Community Church.
There are also groups in Lewisville, The Colony, Plano and Frisco.
This past week, members recorded their weight and will find out next week how many pounds they lost and, as a result, how much they earned. Members can either keep the money or donate it to charity. Slimming World designated Susan G. Komen for the Cure as its charity, though members can donate it to others.
I think its a good motivator, Veytia said. Ill be donating the money to my church, so I know theyll be rooting for me. Plus, I think this will help entice other people to come in.
Veytia just wishes the program started earlier. Shes been one of the more successful members so far, shedding 30 pounds since January. She had been scheduled to undergo gastric bypass surgery but was advised by her doctor to try some weight-loss programs first to even qualify for the procedure. Seeing how well Slimming World has worked for her, she canceled the surgery.
Alma Hall of Flower Mound has also seen a major difference since joining Slimming World. Going back to September, she has dropped 40 pounds. She agrees that adding British pounds into the equation will help.
Its a good motivator because youre getting something tangible, said Hall, who is set to become a consultant in Flower Mound after completing her training.
But Hall doesnt discount the other things Slimming World offers.
This is a safe place to be, Hall said. I get what I need, whether its extra recipes for the rest of the week, or just hearing the good and the bad. If you have a bad week, then (group consultant Carol Twyman) has a good way of encouraging you.
During the meetings, members gather around Twyman and announce the amount of weight they lost, or in some cases gained, in the last week. With that comes applause for the weight loss, encouragement for the goals that fell short and ideas on what works and what doesnt.
There are also awards given out to those who reach various weight-loss milestones, including a healthy food basket for the Slimmer of the Week.
Slimming World uses a food optimizing system that allows members to eat all they want out of a list of free foods, which are very low in calories. The idea is that many people give up on other weight-loss programs because they cant eat as much food, and therefore theyre hungry all the time.
Members then pick from a list of healthy extras, which are broken down to A choices, which feature mostly dairy products, and B choices, which are high in fiber and contain important nutrients.
Then there are the Syns, which are a list of food, ingredients, dips, etc. that members can have but only in a very strict portion. A chart designates a Syns value for a variety of these items.
There are so many choices, and you always stay full, said Fran Gamble, who drives from south Arlington to attend the Flower Mound meetings. This way, food isnt on your mind 24 hours a day. There are so many things you can have, you just have to count the Syns value.
Veytia said portion control isnt for everyone, and with Slimming World, only the Syns need to be closely counted. But she said she doesnt have to worry about that with pasta, potatoes or many of her other favorites.
With this, I can eat as much as I want to, Veytia said. Even the bad stuff, but only certain amounts.

Do men really need their own weight-loss programs?
The two leaders in the industry, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, have targeted men with programs apparently tailored to their unique needs. Working under the premise that “men approach weight loss differently,” Weight Watchers for Men offers a “customized online system built for men, just men,” according to the program’s Web site. Jenny Craig has enlisted actor Jason Alexander as a spokesman and promises guys that they can occasionally splurge on beer and fries.
But do men actually lose weight differently than women do? Or are these “for men” programs just marketing gimmicks?
A bit of both. Arizona-based weight-loss doctor Craig Primack, speaking for the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, says there are a few basic ways in which men diverge from women in their approaches to losing weight. (I’ll get to those in a minute.) But he suggests the differences aren’t big enough to require separate programs. “I think (the companies) are looking for subtypes of people to market to.”
That’s probably a smart business move, as the market is, well, huge. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about a third of all men are obese.
Men, Primack says, “tend to underestimate how much weight they have to lose, and they won’t start until they have 50 pounds” to shed. Plus, he says, “In society now, it’s not frowned upon when a man is mildly overweight.” The same doesn’t
hold true for women.
Men also have an advantage in that they’re generally taller and carry more lean muscle mass, which helps in losing weight, Primack says. “For women, baby weight often puts them behind the eight ball, and they get a second hit around menopause, when they gain weight around the middle.”
Primack notes that while women are generally “slow and persistent” in their approach to weight loss, men tend to “initially lose faster, 15 or more pounds in three or four months. But then they get a little complacent” and their progress slows.
Beyond that, Primack says, “the grand stereotypes are that women are more emotional eaters, and men are habitual overeaters.” To lose weight, both kinds of eaters must change their behavior and habits.
“An emotional eater needs to learn to ask, ‘Am I really hungry?’ before eating, while an overeater needs to look at portion sizes,” he explains.
Weight Watchers launched its for-men program in 2007, says Jason Carpenter, men’s editor of WeightWatchers.com, to see how it would fly. “Before then, we spoke to everyone the same way, and the perception was that Weight Watchers was a women’s company, a women’s program.” Three years later, Carpenter says, the men’s program has proved popular.
“The program itself is exactly the same” as the overall Weight Watchers approach, he says, in that it assigns a point value to every food according to its fat, fiber and calorie content. “But the men’s Web site now engages men differently.”
Carpenter, who at age 36 has “lost 20 pounds so far and could probably lose another 20 or 30,” calls himself “exactly who we’re trying to reach” with Weight Watchers for Men. He notes that “men tend to gravitate toward the fitness part of the program, learning how to be active in addition to using tools to eat right. Women tend to use Weight Watchers more as a food or eating plan.”
The Web site isn’t shy about using sex as an incentive. Better sex, Carpenter says, is presented as “an enjoyable byproduct of losing weight.” The site also notes that obesity often leads to erectile dysfunction, a condition that weight loss may correct.
Weight Watchers won’t say how many of its members are men. Jenny Craig didn’t supply actual numbers, either, but reported that 10 percent of its clients are male.
And though Alexander happens to be the Jenny Craig guy of the moment, he’s not the first. Steve Bellach, the company’s vice president for North American marketing, points out that in years (way) past, Elliott Gould and Jerry Mathers have appeared in Jenny Craig commercials.
As with Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig’s basic approach is the same for men and women: “When someone starts our program, whether male or female, we work with them to understand their eating style, lifestyle and food favorites,” Bellach explains. The company customizes a weight-loss plan for each client. “Men do very well with Jenny Craig, as it allows structure where they handle their consultations over the phone, eat three meals and three snacks per day at designated times, follow preplanned menus, and food preparation is minimal. Men tend to lose weight very consistently,” Bellach says.
That flexibility allows the program to address male clients’ particular diet bugaboos. “Men tend to crave different foods than women. Men long for meat and potatoes, whereas women favor carbohydrates, desserts and chocolate.” Moreover, Bellach says, “portion control is a huge issue for men.” Jenny Craig helps guys learn correct portion sizes and also to “volumize” meals by adding salads, soups and non-starchy vegetables.
Weight loss pills for teens are really not a good idea. Natural and organic weight loss methods are much more effective for younger bodies. If you can mold the approach to the task at hand as a positive experience rather than a negative experience, teens can lose the weight without as much difficulty as adults. Many teens that have weight problems are also suffering from self image problems. In many cases, the self image problems began before the weight was a significant problem.

In order to be successful at losing weight one has to be able to distinguish between things which aid with weight loss and things which hold us back from it. We may be taking the best diet pills on the market (such as the hoodia gordonii), but unless we know a little about fitness and dieting, we will not get very far. By this day and age, numerous people have tried various dieting habits and they have been kind enough to share with the rest of the world what works and what doesnât. Here are some of the most effective weight loss tips.
One of the tips which majority of weight loss enthusiasts found helpful is the consumption of fruit and vegetables. âFive servings a dayâ is one of the major rules for anyone who is serious about losing weight. Consuming fruit and vegetables will not only benefit your overall health but it will also help you shed unwanted pounds. Majority of fresh produce is loaded with beneficial fiber which is known to improve metabolism and sustain hunger. Another tip towards weight loss success is regular physical activity. Anyone who wants to lose weight should try to spend at least 30 minutes on exercise each day. Continuous physical activity will help you build muscle and burn calories faster.
The third step towards weight loss success is protein consumption. A recent study confirms that women who consumed higher levels of protein (approximately 110 grams daily) maintained a 14 pound weight loss for more than a year. Women who consumed 72 grams of protein daily experienced only a 7 ½ pound weight loss during the same time period. One of the most popular sources of protein on the market today is whey protein. Whey protein is easily absorbed by the body, unlike animal protein. These are just a few tips to help you attain the waistline you always wanted.

Are you serious about weight loss? This article describes weight loss myths and explains the truth about dieting.
Weight Loss Myth #1: Fat loss will come naturally if you follow a low carbohydrate diet.
Truth: The truth is that low carbohydrate fad diets are not effective for long-term weight loss. Cutting back on all carbs helps you lose weight initially and will even help you reach your weight loss goal, but the chances that you maintain the weight loss are slim. Restrictive diets are mentally challenging. What happens is the first time you give in to carbohydrate cravings you want more and try to make up for the time you deprived yourself of them. Furthermore, studies show that the brain needs carbohydrates for proper functioning.
Weight Loss Myth #2: Diet pills are the easy way to lose weight.
Truth: Some diet pills are dangerous to your health. Over-the-counter weight loss products aren’t fully tested or FDA approved. Whether it’s a water pill, a fat blocker or a metabolism enhancer, diet pills pose a health risk and have been known to cause illness and even death. Even diet pills that are approved by the FDA are risky. Products are often pulled from shelves after research show unhealthy side effects. Diet pills may help you lose weight fast; they do not provide lasting weight loss.
Weight Loss Myth #3: The top 10 fad diets are based the latest technology and information for weight loss, making them ideal to lose weight fast.
Truth: Many top 10 fad diets are just worthless weight loss products. They are scams to fool people into making the purchase. They exist only to make money off of unsuspecting overweight individuals. A top 10 fad diet may be based on a portion of a recent study that makes sense from a dieter’s perspective, but they rarely offer the big picture. Just because a book has been published on a particular weight loss topic does not make it the best weight loss plan.
Weight Loss Myth #4: Low-fat diets expedite fat loss. Eating low-fat and fat free foods is a simple plan and healthy way to lose weight.
Truth: Low-fat diets actually slow your metabolism, making it more difficult to lose weight and maintain your weight loss. Low-fat diets also leave you feeling hungry and deprived. The body needs a certain amount of healthy fats for normal functioning. Fat also helps you feel full longer. Switching to fat-free and low-fat products alone will not help you reach your weight loss goals.
Weight Loss Myth #5: Supplements are a safe method for accelerating weight loss.
Truth: Supplements advertise their natural ingredients that aid weight loss. The truth is that 97% of weight loss supplements are completely worthless. Supplements are not regulated and while they may boast all natural ingredients, that doesn’t mean they are healthy for your body.
Avoid Fad diets and Lose Weight the Healthy Way
These myths bring up the questions of why people are encouraged to buy weight loss products that don’t work. Companies that sell top 10 fad diets and run weight loss scams are simply capitalizing on a billion-dollar industry. Obviously, these companies don’t want overweight people to know the truth about healthy, simple plans that work. That would cost them sales.
The healthy way to lose weight is to avoid top 10 fad diets and weight loss scams. The best kept diet plan secrets are simply this: knowing what healthy organic and whole foods to eat and when, regular exercise and having the right mindset. This simple plan is the key to obtaining and maintaining a healthy weight.
